Types of Smoke Detectors for Roseville

Smoke Detectors Save Lives & Property

Smoke detectors give advance warning of a fire so residents or people in commercial buildings can:

  • Get out safely
  • Call firefighters (if required)
  • In some cases, put out small, localized blazes (such as in a cooking pan fire)

Note: Always err on the side of caution, getting out safely is more important that preventing structural damage.

At SERVPRO® of St. Clair Shores, we’re used to hearing “smoke alarm” and “smoke detector” used interchangeably, but firefighters disagree, and they’re the experts. Smoke alarms may be connected to each other, but they are not connected to alarm panels. Such panels alert emergency services. Smoke detectors, which are required in commercial and public buildings, are connected to alarm panels.

The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) notes that fire moves quickly, so it reminds people to change smoke-detector batteries regularly, or to have a hardwired system that does not require batteries. Many hardwired smoke detectors/alarms include battery backups.

When an alarm sounds, the most important step is to get everyone out of the house. At SERVPRO of St. Clair Shores, we have plans for getting our pets to safety as well.

If there is property damage, but the building and contents remain, restoration and remediation are possible. Call SERVPRO of St. Clair Shores at 586-741-5050.

We have 24/7 emergency service, so call as soon as possible.

Types of Detectors

Basics

  • Photoelectric: most responsive to smoldering fires, detect smoke before they detect heat
  • Ionization: most responsive to fires that blaze suddenly, detect rapid increases in heat, best for fast-burning fires
  • Combination: has both sets of features

Although some businesses require one feature more than the other, most people are better off with detectors that sense both kinds of fires. Some commercial buildings use different types of detectors in specific areas, but combination detectors work well enough that specialization is not usually required.

Extras

  • Alarms can be wired to each other so if one goes off, they all do. Interconnection is especially helpful when there is no connection to an alarm panel.
  • Detectors may come with LED lights, or be connected to LED lights, making smoky surroundings easier to navigate
  • Some smoke detectors include monitors for carbon monoxide, which is odorless and invisible, and can be fatal

Remember

Personal safety is more important than equipment or other property. Things can be repaired or replaced; people cannot.

If smoke detectors in Macomb County save lives at the expense of property damage, call SERVPRO of St. Clair Shores. We’ll celebrate your safety as we begin remediation from fire damage.
